Tips for Sticking to Your Diet During the Holidays

Perhaps the only thing harder than finding a parking space at the mall around the holidays is sticking to a diet. With buffets and dessert tables at every turn, November and December are the two months most people tend to gain weight in.

If you’re looking to maintain your weight or lose weight, for either health or cosmetic reasons, we’ve got a few tips that can help make that dream a reality.

Eat Breakfast Every Morning

It’s true what they say — breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Especially on actual holidays when dinner is served earlier and hors d’oeuvres cover coffee tables all day, eating a healthy breakfast will prevent you from snacking or overeating.

Practice Realistic Portion Sizes

Depriving yourself of every delicious carb or starch on the table will not only cause you to overindulge late at night, but it really can put a damper on your holiday. The trick is not to avoid unhealthy or fatty foods altogether, but to enjoy them sparingly. Look at your plate before you eat and ask yourself, “are there mostly fruits, vegetables, and lean meats on my plate?” If the answer is yes, a small spoonful of mashed potatoes or pasta will not ruin your diet.

Stay Active

What should you do after dinner? We’ll give you a hint, the answer is not to sit and watch football — it’s to go for a walk! Even minimal intensity exercise will help you digest your meal quicker and work off any “cheat foods” you enjoyed throughout the day.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol affects your diet in several ways. First and foremost, most alcohols are high in calories. But because alcohol affects your decision making, too many drinks can cause you to abandon your diet altogether and make poor food choices.

Whether you just underwent a cosmetic procedure, like liposuction, and are trying to maintain your figure or you’re just looking to remain healthy throughout the holidays, sticking to a (flexible) diet is key.
