Are Fat Transfer Procedures Dangerous?

August 28, 2017

You know what they say about surgery… the only minor form of surgery is the one that is not happening to you. While cosmetic procedures are different than trauma surgery or something of that nature, they can still be scary. We want to highlight our fat transfer procedures and give you a breakdown of some of the concerns that we often hear:

What kind of anesthesia is used?

In most cases, these procedures are done under our special method of local anesthesia which reduces risks and costs. If you are looking to move a large amount of fat, or are combining this with another procedure, there is a chance you might have to use general anesthesia. We are an AAAHC accredited facility and our attention to detail makes every procedure less risky.

What are the risks?

  • As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved.
  • More invasive procedures could cause blood loss, scarring and pain that you wouldn’t see in Smartlipo.
  • In some rare cases, people will feel that a fat transfer has given them uneven results. A second procedure to repair it is of course more dangerous.
  • Most fat transfer procedures are NOT covered by insurance.

How long do results last?

Whether you are getting Liposuction or a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, the results will typically be long lasting. After about three months of recovery, 80% of the fat that has been transferred will remain in the intended area. Most of our patients find that this is the perfect amount, not too big and no longer too little. It also gives more of a clean and authentic look as the new fat will look swollen for a period of time after the procedure.

Today’s beauty standards are higher than ever before. With celebrity bodies on display through television, magazines and on the Internet, many people decide that particular parts of our bodies could look better if they only looked differently. Some of these procedures include fat transfer (fat grafting) of the lips, cheeks, buttocks (Brazilian butt lift), breast augmentation (natural breast augmentation), and hand rejuvenation.
