6 Common Myths About Liposuction

November 9, 2018

Liposuction is without a doubt one of the most popular cosmetic procedures out there. But from friends and family members to magazine covers, not everything you hear and read about liposuction is accurate. That’s why we’re breaking down some of the most common myths we hear about liposuction every day.

Myth #1: Liposuction is intended for weight loss.

Contrary to popular belief, liposuction is not considered a weight loss tool. Though some weight loss will be a result of the procedure, the goal of liposuction is to contour and shape a person’s body.

Myth #2: Fat can grow back after liposuction.

Because fat is removed from your body altogether, there’s no possibility of it “growing” back. However, it is possible to gain weight after liposuction if you don’t eat a well-balanced diet or exercise.

Myth #3: You’ll have to wear a compression garment for several months after liposuction.

Simply not true! The compression garment we give to patients after liposuction is typically worn for no more than a week or so.

Myth #4: Liposuction is painful.

During any and every liposuction procedure, we use some form of anesthesia, meaning you feel very little to no discomfort.

Myth #5: You’ll have to go under general anesthesia for all liposuction procedures.

If you’re having one or two small areas being treated, your surgeon will likely only need to use local anesthesia. The only time you’ll need to be put under general anesthesia is if you’re having multiple areas treated at once.

Myth #6: Liposuction can cause lumps or puckered skin.

Though it is possible, this is incredibly rare. Puckering typically only happens if all the fat is removed from one area. Our skilled surgeons understand that some fat has to be left in order to give patients a smooth, realistic body shape.
