Everything Patients Recovering from Cosmetic Surgery Around the Holidays Should Know
December 7, 2018
Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season is one of the best times to get cosmetic surgery — you have time off of work, can bundle up, and will kick off the New Year feeling confident. No matter when you have your surgery, the recovery process will be relatively similar, but there are a few things you should keep in mind in you’re recovering during the holidays.
Don’t push yourself.
With presents to buy, decorations to hang, and food to cook, it can be tempting to forgo a few days of bed rest. But because rest is so crucial to your recovery, it’s important that you not exert yourself.
Ask someone to care for you for the first 72 hours.
Depending on the procedure you have, it may be difficult for you to bathe or use the bathroom alone for a few days. This is why we suggest everyone who undergoes cosmetic surgery have someone else live with them for the first two or three days following surgery.
Avoid alcohol.
Especially around the holidays, it can be tempting to indulge in a few drinks. Unfortunately, alcohol can slow down your recovery process and lead to serious complications.
Don’t binge on holiday favorites.
Alcohol isn’t the only temptation you’ll face around the holidays. Buffets and dessert tables can also be dangerous, especially if you had a body sculpting or weight loss procedure. Though it’s okay to enjoy a cookie or two, don’t overindulge on sweets and fatty foods.
Don’t travel unless it’s necessary.
Recovery is about three things — rest, rest, and more rest! Traveling puts added stress on your mind and body because it forces you to sit in one position for a long time. Not only can this affect your recovery, but it can be very physically uncomfortable.
Follow each and every instruction your doctor gives you.
Trust in your doctor. Everything he/she says is for your benefit and should be taken seriously. Whether they suggest you not move heavy things or ask you to wear a piece of medical clothing, take what they say seriously. If you’re ever unsure of something, don’t hesitate to ask!
