How Fat Affects Men’s and Women’s Bodies Differently
October 5, 2018
Attention women — does it ever feel like your husband or boyfriend is having an easier time losing weight than you are? We’re here to tell you that it’s not your imagination — it’s science.
Fat Storage
Because a woman’s body is designed to prepare for a baby at almost any time, women begin storing more fat than boys of the same age around puberty. In theory, this additional amount of fat will help nourish mom and baby in the event the woman gets pregnant.
On average, healthy, active women have a body fat percentage of between 18 – 20%, whereas the average healthy man will have a body fat percentage of between 10 – 15%.
Fat Distribution
In addition to having slightly more fat on their bodies, women also store fat very differently than men. Women tend to store fat in their thighs, lower abdomen, and buttocks. However, men tend to store fat in their chest and abdomen.
Understanding the Different Types of Fat
Here’s where it gets good for women — you tend to store healthier fat than men. The term “fat” is often used as a general term that encompasses both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat, which is found in more abundance in women, sits under the skin and is considered to be “healthier fat.” However, visceral fat is fat that lines your organs — visceral fat is more likely to be found in men and is a major reason why men are more likely to die from fat-related illnesses.
What Does it All Mean?
Remember — these are general findings depicting the difference between men and women’s bodies. It also doesn’t mean that women, in particular, can’t lose weight. It often means that in order for women to see results, they have to stick with a long-term, healthy lifestyle, rather than fad diets or short periods of frequent exercise (though in reality, men should take this advice too, as fad diets have been known to be unhealthy).
