7 Tips for Summer Exercise
July 17, 2019
If you’re like many people, summer is your time to focus on health, wellness, and fitness. But unfortunately, warm weather exercising can sometimes do more harm than good. This summer, keep yourself feeling strong and confident by:
1. Not working out during the hottest parts of the day.
Noon is not the time to go out for a run. Instead opt for early in the morning or late at night, when the sun is not as strong.
2. Wearing light, breathable clothes.
It’s time to swap out dark, thick fabrics in exchange for lightweight, cotton ones.
3. Drinking lots of water.
Water should be your best friend throughout the year, but it’s even more important to always carry water with you in the summer. If you feel yourself getting dizzy or light headed, you should sit down and drink water right away, as these are signs of dehydration.
4. Wearing sunscreen.
Even if you’re just going out for a quick run, it’s important to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before heading outside.
5. Learning the warning signs of heatstroke.
Heatstroke is a serious and real threat when outside in the summer. Heat exhaustion can present itself as:
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Excessive thirst
- Slow heartbeat
- Dizziness
6. Running with a friend.
Not only will a friend motivate you to exercise when you’re just not in the mood, but they can also play a vital role in your safety. If while out you happen to faint or hurt yourself, they can reach out for help.
7. Working smarter, not harder.
Now is the time to take advantage of the pool or New York’s many beautiful beaches. Not only are water sports a low impact exercise, but they can keep you from overheating.
