Is Liposuction Permanent?

October 17, 2018

It’s a word you’ve heard on TV and seen in magazines, but do you really know what liposuction is? Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that “sucks” fat from a person’s body. During the procedure, a surgeon will insert a hollow tube (known as a cannula) under a patient’s skin and remove excess fat. Most often, liposuction is performed on a person’s stomach, thighs, buttocks, and hips.

What many people don’t realize about liposuction is that it does more than just remove excess fat, it can also give you a desired shape by removing fat from specific parts of the body.

Is Liposuction Permanent?

Because the fat cells removed during a liposuction procedure can’t grow back, the results are permanent. However, it is possible for patients to gain weight after the procedure if they don’t eat a healthy diet or exercise. But the benefit of this procedure is that you will maintain your desired shape, regardless of weight gain. Essentially, your silhouette will now simply be a larger version of your desired shape if you gain weight after surgery.

Maintaining the Results of Liposuction

For patients to enjoy the full effects of liposuction, it’s universally advised that a patient not gain weight after the procedure. If a 150-pound woman has 6 pounds of fat removed, we advise she keep her weight around 144 pounds. The best way to do this is through normal diet and exercise.

  • Don’t exceed your daily caloric needs (the average diet is based on 2,000 calories).
  • Avoid processed and frozen foods — many are known for being high in salt, sugar, and artificial ingredients.
  • Have smaller, but more frequent meals throughout the day.
  • Avoid excessive eating at night.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Exercise regularly, with special emphasis on increasing your daily activity level. For example, it’s better to work out for 20 minutes each morning than to go to the gym for two hours, once a week.
