The History of Men and Cosmetic Surgery

July 26, 2018

If you look at magazines, billboards, and TV commercials, you’ll see that advertisements for cosmetic surgery almost always feature and are targeted towards women. But why is that? Today, roughly 15 percent of cosmetic surgery patients are men. Though women still make up the majority of patients, men have been enjoying the benefits of cosmetic surgery for decades.

Why Do Men Get Cosmetic Surgery?

Most simply put, because they want to! Just like women, men also have certain insecurities or things about themselves that they would like to change.

New studies suggest that men are turning to cosmetic surgery as a way of staying competitive in the job market.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) more than 1.3 cosmetic procedures were performed on men last year, a slight increase from the year before. In fact, since, 2000, minimally invasive procedures, like Botox injections, are up 99 percent among men.

Male Breast Reductions are on the Rise

Though facelifts and Botox injections are on the rise, perhaps no cosmetic procedure has become as popular as male breast reduction surgery, also known as gynecomastia surgery. One major reason for this is recent advancements in the procedure. Years ago, surgeons would have to make large cuts on the chest to remove breast tissue. Now, breast tissue can be removed through very small incisions near the armpit. Over time, these incisions heal and leave virtually no scaring at all.

The Future of Men’s Cosmetic Surgery

As gender stereotypes continue to be squashed by both males and females, it’s unlikely this trend will quit anytime soon. The goal of cosmetic procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks is to make both men and women feel their very best. Because of this, we expect to see more men than ever take advantage of cosmetic surgery in 2019!
