Understanding the Relationship Between Hormones and Male Breasts

Like any medical issue, Gynecomastia and Low T can be caused by a number of different factors. The leading cause, however, is irregular hormone levels in the affected male. Sometimes there is an increase in estrogen production or simply a defect that limits testosterone production in the male testicles. When this happens, male breasts might begin to form and this can be uncomfortable for men in social situations. Below, we outline the relationship between male breasts and hormone levels and we explain how we can help!

Low Testosterone
Low testosterone becomes more common as men age. In fact, 1 in every 4 men over the age of 45 have low T according to the Urology Care Foundation. If you suffer from low T, you could face some of the following symptoms:

  • Reduced sex drive
  • Low sperm count
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Enlarged male breasts, or Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia
Hormones play a pivotal role in the development of male breasts and irregular hormone levels are a direct cause of Gynecomastia. When boys reach puberty, their hormone levels start to fluctuate and it isn’t uncommon for a teenage boy to develop breasts as a result. Fortunately, teenage Gynecomastia is often treatable with natural methods like diet and exercise but as men age, surgical treatment becomes more common.

Causes
Low testosterone and Gynecomastia can be attributed to any of the following factors:

  • Damage to cells in the testes
  • Testicular swelling
  • Radiation and chemotherapy treatment
  • Diseases that affect the pituitary gland
  • Steroid treatments

Treatments
There are a number of different treatments for Gynecomastia and Low T on the market today. For testosterone, some doctors will prescribe skin patches, gels or injections designed to restore the testosterone levels in your body.
