Does a Thigh Lift Leave You With Scars?

When you think about cosmetic surgery, a thigh lift probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. While it might not be as common as a breast augmentation or facelift, thigh lifts are anything but uncommon. Since 1997, thigh lift procedures have increased by nearly 500%, with almost 17,000 performed in 2015 alone.

If you’re considering a thigh lift, scarring is something you have to consider. While a consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeons on Long Island can give you a more personalized answer, below are a few things you should know about the thigh lift procedure and scarring.

What is a Thigh Lift?

Also known as a thighplasty, a thigh lift is just that — a procedure designed to lift, tighten, and firm your legs. By removing excess skin and fat from the inside and outside areas of your thigh, a cosmetic surgeon can shape your legs, while also making them appear smaller.

Does a Thigh Lift Leave Scars?

The goal of any cosmetic surgery procedure is to leave patients with minimal scarring. However, it is possible for patients to experience some level of scarring, because an incision will need to be made on either the inside of the thigh, the outside, or potentially both.

Typically, incisions made on the outside of the thigh are bigger than ones made on the inside.

Diminishing the Look of Scars

Because each patient’s skin and body reacts differently to cosmetic surgery, it is possible to have little to no noticeable scars following a thigh lift.

If you do notice scarring, talk to your doctor about a few of the many ways to minimize its appearance:

  • Keep the scar moist by putting lotion on it every day.
  • Cover your scar with sunscreen whenever you go out in the sun.
  • Use mineral makeup if you plan on covering up a scar.

The Ideal Candidate for a Thigh Lift

The ideal candidate for a thigh lift is someone who:

  • Recently lost a large amount of weight.
  • Has excess soft tissue along their inner and outer thigh.
  • Does not smoke.
  • Is in overall good health.
  • Plans to live a healthy lifestyle after surgery.
